Seasonal Depression

It’s almost that time of the year again. The days are starting to get longer, the low isn’t in

the 20s and the snow is finally melting. Spring is coming! Less daylight and dreary

weather can take a toll on your body, both physically and mentally. That will soon all be

sunshine and warm rays beating down. But until that happens, you can still find a way to

keep yourself happier and more energized by the things you do and the choices you

make.

Here are a few tips to help you get through this last chunk of winter feeling your best:

Spend time outdoors. No matter where you live, spending time outdoors can boost

your mood and health. A dose of vitamin D will do some good. The fresh air can make

you feel better. Just be sure to dress for mother nature.

Protect yourself from contagious illness. There are lots of viruses still going around

at the end of the cold season. Stay clear of people who appear to be sick, wash your

hands, and avoid touching your face. Wearing a mask if you’re in close quarters could

also prevent illnesses. Keep your immune system strong by following healthy lifestyles.

Enjoy nutritious food. Winter isn’t all about eating your favorite comfort foods.

Delicious winter means can feature some of the healthiest foods. Cook up some stew or

soup filled with nutritious vegetables and whole grains. IN-season produce such as

winter squash, kale, broccoli, brussels sprouts, citrus fruits and pomegranates, are

loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Stay active. It can be hard to motivate yourself to exercise when the days are short and

the weather is dreary, but exercising now as it is at any other time of the year. If you

usually workout outdoors, but the weather isn’t cooperating, find some activities indoors.

If you don’t go to the gym, but want to start working out, YouTube is a great way to get

free workouts right in the comfort of your own home. You can use everyday objects

around your home to use as weights.

Be good to your skin. Cold dry air outdoors combined with dry heat indoors can wreak

havoc on your skin. Apply moisturizer after a shower to keep your skin moisturized.

Don’t spend too much time in the hot water. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Also

don’t forget the sunscreen when you go outside – UV rays from the sun can still

damage your skin even in winter.
